This is why I have a recurring thing in my fics where Gojyo is very self-deprecating, downplaying his own problems and making excuses for his stepmother, when the subject comes up. This is a horribly common pattern with emotional abuse in particular, internalizing all the guilt, blaming yourself for your own victimization rather than the abusive parent, etc. And Jien, with that whole adultified-child situation, would so have that internalized caretaker role weighing him down with guilt whenever he can't fix and take care of everyone..."
WORD. I hate their mother so, so much, but you know that neither Gojyo nor Doku would ever say a word against her. And Gojyo - Doku, I think would have just enought perspective to get that it was his mother who was no well, at least intellectually, but I don't think Gojyo ever grew out of trying listing reasons that his mother didn't love him and shouldn't - the hair, the bastard child, etc.
Which.... *squishes Gojyo*... just makes me want to ressurect his mother and kill her in a manner befitting her crimes.
